Description
Asymptomatic bacteriuria:
- RN’s often request treatment for asymptomatic bacteriuria when they see a urine culture was done and something grew. Or they request treatment or a urine culture be done for urine that smells bad and/ or looks bad.
- I would like for nursing to stop requesting for unnecessary urine cultures and treatment for asymptomatic bacteriuria.
- Provided nursing coordinator with a link to the UW TASP presentation on “Myths Surrounding UTI Diagnosis”, this was added to Health Streams as education for nursing.
Core Elements
Education
Educating clinicians about resistance and optimal prescribing.
PDSA Cycles
Progress on PDSA Cycle 1
1) Reduction in the request of urine cultures/ and treatment for urine that is smelly and/ or dark/cloudy in the absence of UTI symptoms by nursing staff.
2) Predict that requests for urine cultures and unnecessary treatment will decrease.
3) Pharmacist- Keriann Bennett, nursing coordinator Holly Hall and nursing staff.
4) Small test of change… Have noticed a decrease in AM rounding meeting of requests for urine cultures.
5) How long will the change take to implement- has been implemented
6) Resources provided to nursing staff the UW TASP presentation on Myths surrounding UTI diagnosis, uploaded in to Health Streams as education to nursing staff.
7) Data that needs to be collected is the amount of urine cultures being done and the number of UTI treatment.
